LOUISIANA CAJUN-ZYDECO FESTIVAL

Acadiana comes to the Crescent City in a big way this weekend, during the seventh annual Louisiana Cajun-Zydeco Festival at the Old U.S. Mint. An all-star collection of musicians this year includes Rosie Ledet, Beausoleil, Geno Delafose & French Rockin’ Boogie, Nathan & the Zydeco Cha Chas, the Lost Bayou Ramblers and many more. With two stages for Acadiana’s best bands, a huge crafts fair and great food, the Cajun-Zydeco Fest is a dance-happy celebration of the rockin’ music of southwest Louisiana.

FOLLOW THAT BUGGY

Church Point City Park comes alive with clopping hooves and clattering spokes when the thirty-first annual Buggy Festival trundles into town. Church Point was branded the “Buggy Capital of the World” when it remained one of the few towns that continued to have unpaved roads. Nowadays, the tradition continues with a weekend festival of live music and dancing, good food, crafts, and of course, a buggy display and buggy parade.

 DIDGERIDOO

The Didgeridoo is an Australian musical instrument that Aboriginal people of the Kadaku region have been playing for more than 1,500 years. Hear the unusual sound it makes when Lindsey Dank plays at varying East Baton Rouge Parish libraries. The program focus will be on making music, with information about Australian geography, history, culture, science, ecology, animals, language, and the importance of respect for others and the environment. AIDS CANDLELIGHT MEMORIAL

The 29th Annual International AIDS Candlelight Memorial will take place on Sunday. This globally-recognized memorial is among the world’s oldest HIV/AIDS remembrance, awareness and community action events. The Candlelight Memorial supports individuals living with HIV/AIDS by reducing negative stigma, promoting testing and prevention, and continuing the fight against this disease. For the Baton Rouge observance, HAART has planned a candlelight vigil and a memorial walk beginning at North Boulevard Town Square. 6:30 pm
